Public Charge Rule Update

This month, USCIS updated its public charge resources webpage with more information to help better inform immigrants about obtaining access to critical government services available to them.

As a reminder, under the Biden administration, USCIS reverted to a less strict interpretation of the public charge rule, which means that immigration applicants cannot be denied just for utilizing services that are available to the general public.

New countries were designated with Temporary Protected Status

Additionally, two new countries were designated with Temporary Protected Status by the Department of Homeland Security this month: Afghanistan and Cameroon. Individuals applying for TPS must submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status, during the 18-month initial registration period that runs from May 20, 2022, through Nov. 20, 2023.
