Latest Immigration News

December brought significant updates in U.S. immigration policies that are likely to impact families pursuing permanent residence. From new requirements for green card applications to anticipated shifts under a returning administration, staying informed is more important than ever. Here’s a breakdown of the latest news.

USCIS Mandates Form I-693 Submission with Green Card Applications

In a recent policy shift, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) now requires applicants to submit Form I-693 at the same time as their green card application.

USCIS may reject the application if Form I-693, or “Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record,” is not attached. In addition to complete medical exams, this change also affects vaccination-only records.

By mandating simultaneous submission, USCIS seeks to minimize the back-and-forth and make decisions faster.

This new requirement affects anyone applying for adjustment of status, including family-based applicants, and other eligible groups. If you’re planning to submit a green card application, gathering your documentation, including an updated medical exam, will be key.

To comply, applicants need to schedule an appointment with a USCIS-authorized civil surgeon for the medical examination. The completed Form I-693, signed by the doctor, must then accompany your Form I-485.

Trump Immigration Policy in a Second Term: What Families Need to Know

During President Donald Trump’s first term, policies such as travel bans and stricter immigration enforcement profoundly affected immigrant communities. While much remains uncertain, early indications suggest that similar themes may shape the administration’s focus in 2025.

Family reunification pathways could face additional scrutiny. Proposals to make eligibility requirements more strict or limit categories of family-based immigration have surfaced in past discussions. While no changes have been announced yet, this is something to monitor closely in the coming months.

Immigration enforcement could also increase. The last administration spent more money on border security and used more detention centers. If these policies return, families with mixed immigration statuses or pending applications could face more challenges.

While these possibilities can raise concerns, it’s worth noting that immigration laws are subject to checks and balances. Advocacy groups and legal experts are already preparing to respond to any policy changes, and court challenges often slow or block the implementation of controversial measures.
