DACA News Recap
The DACA program had some ups and downs this year, as it has in the recent past. In September, a United States District Judge ruled in favor of Texas and 8 other states claiming the DACA program is illegal. Notably, the judge’s decision put into question the legality of the program but declined to order an end to it either.
The decision is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court, sending the program’s fate before the high court for a third time. Most likely, the Supreme Court will once again refuse the case and hand the decision back to the lower courts.
For now, existing participants in the DACA program can continue to apply for renewals and request advance parole as well.
Finally, remember that USCIS made a number of technical updates this year in an attempt to improve the applicant experience:
- Expanding myProgress to Form I-485 and Form I-821
- New USCIS tool to update addresses
- Updated Addresses for Filing Applications
- Removal of the 60 Day Rule for Medical Exams
- Launch of Online Rescheduling of Biometrics Appointments
Let us hope that these changes will lead to a faster and more convenient application process, and will continue to be improved upon in 2024.
