April 2024 Newsletter: Change of Address for Filing Certain Forms

There’s been quite a few important announcements from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which we have outlined below:

Change of Address for Filing Certain Forms

As of April 1, 2024, USCIS is changing the filing location for concurrently filed Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, and for related Forms I-131, Application for Travel Document; I-765, Application for Employment Authorization; and I-824, Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition, filed with the application package, from USCIS service centers to a USCIS lockbox. Please visit the announcement page for more information.

Longer Validity for Medical and Vaccination Records

A brand new USCIS rule states that any Form I-693, Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record that was properly completed and signed by a civil surgeon on or after Nov. 1, 2023, does not expire and can be used indefinitely as evidence to show that the applicant is not inadmissible on health-related grounds. Before this change, Form I-693 was valid for just two years from the date of the civil surgeon’s signature.

USCIS officers still have the discretion to request more evidence or a new or updated Form I-693 under special circumstances.

More Convenient SSNs and Third Gender Option for Naturalization Applicants

As of this month, applicants filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization will have the option to request an original or replacement Social Security number (SSN) or card and update their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) without having to separately visit an SSA office as they had to do previously.

Separately, as of this month, Form N-400 will now have a third gender option, “X,” defined as “Another Gender Identity.”
